Today more than ever, the Federal government is sticking its big, fat nose into the quality of our food and passing laws that are not only dangerous to the public’s health but also blatantly supportive of big businesses like Monsanto, whose decades-long history of toxic contamination was chronicled in a 2008 Vanity Fair article by Donald L. Barlett and James B. Steele. In the article, the authors recount Monsanto’s evolutionary journey, from a corporate chemical giant that brought us the ubiquitous weed killer Roundup®, to a self-described “agricultural company” dedicated to making the world “a better place for future generations.”
The story begins in 1980 with a U.S. Supreme Court decision that extended patent law to cover “a live human-made microorganism” and laid the groundwork for a handful of corporations to take control of the world’s food supply. Monsanto reacted swiftly to the ruling and, leading the world in genetic modification of seeds, developed seeds to resist its own herbicide, which allowed farmers to spray their fields with Roundup without killing their crops. The corporation then patented the Roundup Ready® seeds and instigated an aggressive campaign to enforce its patent rights and compel farmers to use its branded products.
The article recounts an astonishing tale of corporate greed, immorality and manipulation, with farmers and consumers as the victims, but here’s the bottom line: in little more than a decade, Monsanto’s genetically modified seeds have radically altered global agriculture, and today Monsanto is the largest seed company in the world. Monsanto would have us believe that these developments signal progress, when, in fact, the corporation has seized control of our food supply.
Because articles like this often get lost in the noise and toxic propaganda spewing out from these corporate behemoths’ PR departments, most consumers are simply not aware of the damage that companies like Monsanto are inflicting on their health and the environment.
