Vegetarianism And The Effects Eating Meat Has On Our Planet

Feed the World Week begins today. From the 15th to 21st of October, Food for Life volunteers and friends will make a concerted effort to encourage the sharing and distribution of pure vegetarian food in an effort to decrease world hunger and humanity's unnecessary dependence on factory farming.

"Over forty billion animals are unnecessarily killed every year around the world," says Paul Turner, director of Food for Life Global. "This includes around 100 million chickens daily. The figures are astonishing and ghastly. There is simply no need for all this killing. The earth can easily sustain humankind with fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, nuts and seeds," he explained.

According to the World Food Programme, every five seconds a child dies because she or he is hungry. But amazingly, it is not because of a lack of food in the world, but rather, "inequitable distribution", according to a United Nations report. "There is too much greed and poor management of the earth's bounty," said Turner. "Land that could be used for growing food for feeding these children is instead used to grow corn, soybeans and other grains to feed farm animals that are killed and served up to the wealthier nations. All the while, children in developing countries beg for dry rations of processed foods."

Feed the World Week is a time to help correct this gross imbalance and teach the world that if there is one thing that we can all agree on, it is that food speaks all languages. It has the ability to break down barriers, to heal, to inspire, and to make people smile. More than anything else on this planet, food has the ability to unite us. That is why Food for Life Global's slogan is: Uniting the world through pure food. We encourage everyone, everywhere to join with us during this week and discover the magic of sharing food. Prepare a healthy vegetarian meal cooked with love and share it with your neighbor. Distribute pure food to the needy in your area, or go and support a local Food for Life Global affiliate project.

Never underestimate the power of food to change the world. It is the most fundamental expression of love. Make a difference in someone's life this week. You will find that serving brings the greatest pleasure. Do it this week, but do it in the most conscious way possible. Serve only vegetarian meals cooked with love. The highest and purest form of such food is traditionally called "prasadam". You can learn more about that on our prasadam page.

According to their web site report, WFP provided school meals and/or take home rations to 20.2 million children in 71 countries in 2006. This is certainly laudable, but when you consider that Food for Life Global affiliates are serving over 1 million meals every day during school season, it goes to show just how effective a much smaller NGO with enthusiastic volunteers and a commitment to a much more efficient vegetarian diet can achieve!

Please join us in changing the way the world eats and in doing so bring about real lasting peace and prosperity. Do it now!
